How to Choose the Right Sectional for Your Living Room
Posted by Furniture Source on Oct 28th 2026
A sectional is often the biggest piece of furniture in a home, and the one your family uses most. Getting the size, shape and fabric right makes a huge difference in how your living room looks and feels. Here is a simple way to narrow down your options.
1. Measure the room, then measure again
Start with the wall where the sectional will sit and the open space in front of it. Leave about 30 to 36 inches for walkways and around 16 to 18 inches between the seat and your coffee table. Use painter's tape on the floor to outline the footprint so you can see how much room it really takes up. Don't forget to measure doorways, hallways and stairs for delivery.
2. Pick the right shape
- L-shaped: the most flexible choice. Works in corners and open floor plans.
- U-shaped: great for large rooms and families who love movie nights.
- Chaise sectional: adds a spot to stretch out without taking up as much space as a full L.
- Modular: individual pieces you can rearrange as your needs change.
3. Decide which side the chaise goes on
Sectionals are described as left-arm facing or right-arm facing. Stand in front of the sofa as if you are looking at it: if the chaise or longer side is on your left, it is left-arm facing. Think about where your TV, windows and walkways are before you choose.
4. Choose a fabric for your lifestyle
Kids and pets? Look at performance fabrics and tightly woven textures that resist stains and snags. Want a plush, cozy feel? Soft corduroy-style and velvet fabrics are very popular right now. Leather and faux leather wipe clean easily and age well.
5. Test the comfort
Seat depth matters. Deeper seats are perfect for lounging, while standard depth is better if you prefer to sit upright. Cushion fill also changes the feel, from firm foam to soft, sink-in comfort.
